THE JACK BLOOR FUND

WHAT is the Jack Bloor Fund?

The Jack Bloor Fund was established in 1985 to commemorate the life of Jack Bloor. Jack is a Yorkshire legend. He was a pioneering fell runner and climber who also orienteered, caved and cycled. As well as being an accomplished athlete in his own right, Jack was a former chairman of the Yorkshire BMC, helped start the Three Peaks Fell Race (which he won 1956) and coached world class orienteers.

The Fund Trustees have tried to keep the essence of Jack’s enthusiasm for encouraging young people to enjoy the outdoors whilst always aiming to fulfil their potential.

The Fund awards grants to young sportspeople from Yorkshire who want to improve their physical and/or technical skills in any recognised outdoor adventure sport. For example, we have supported individuals engaged in rock climbing, fell running, orienteering, sailing, cyclocross, kayaking and mountaineering.

The annual Jack Bloor Races are held on Yorkshire’s iconic Ilkley Moor. All monies raised supports the work of Jack’s memorial Fund. Held on the second Tuesday in May, these FRA-affiliated, evening races comprise the classic senior fell race plus five junior races.

WHY do we do it and who we will support?

It costs money to improve skills, reach your full potential or take on a challenge that would otherwise be out of reach to young people. All athletes need extra training to gain international selection, navigation skills are required in all types of terrain for orienteers aiming to be world class, mountain leader training and assessment certificates are needed to help guide others, independent mountaineering or kayaking expeditions need money to explore new places.

The Jack Bloor Fund supports all sorts of outdoor adventure sports; it’s a great fund that helps young people to be adventurous and gain confidence to become mature, capable, healthy and responsible individuals in the outdoors.
