Jack Bloor Race Report – 8th May 2007

07 Mens Winner 07 Ladies winner
The blustery May weather gave way to a calm sunny evening for the 22nd running of the Jack Bloor Memorial race sponsored by The Complete Runner of Leeds Road, Ilkley. Conditions were perfect for fast running with the recent dry period making the moor completely dry underfoot, with the heather fires of 2006 creating fast route choice options not previously considered.

And so it was that the senior race saw the men’s record of 12 years shattered by a minute by Greg Hull the previous record holder when he was just a young lad (he is now a veteran over 40). Just one second behind in the sprint finish was his Leeds City team mate, Chris Birchall, followed by last year’s winner Karl Gray of Calder Valley.

With Greg also the first over 40 vet, the first over 50 was local Malcolm Pickering of Ilkley Harriers.

The team competition was won by Leeds City, with Ilkley Harriers second and Pudsey and Bramley third.

The ladies race was won by last years winner Jo Buckley making it three wins in a row, with Alison Weston second and Sarah Haines third, both of Ilkley Harriers.

The Mike Rose Bowl for the first over 40 lady vet went to Alison Weston.

The junior races were well supported as usual with 111 runners over classes from 6 to 16. The highlight of these races was the finish of the boy’s 14-16 event, where Tom Sessford, Duncan Birtwhistle, and Alex Sinclair were locked in a tremendous tussle coming down the hill to a terrific sprint finish with only 2 seconds separating all three runners. As ever the races were well supported by orienteers and climbers as befits Jack Bloor’s legacy.
