Rules & Safety

This is an official FRA fell race held under FRA Rules

FRA Licence Number 2023-8326

 All senior competitors and consenting parents or legal guardians of junior competitors must read, familiarise and comply with:

2023 FRA REQUIREMENTS FOR RUNNERS – ‘The Runners Rules’

In particular, please note:

  1. Safety Equipment – Competitors must bring and expect to wear or carry:
  • Waterproof, whole body cover
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Compass
  • Map
  • Whistle

The Race Organiser may relax some of these kit requirements depending on the weather conditions

As the race is held on an evening in May competitors should be equipped for all conditions – Apart from mist, rain and cold, the main risk of bad weather is thunderstorm, including lightning &/or heavy rain.

All runners should understand the risk of Hypothermia and take precaution

  1. Race Numbers must be worn on the chest and be visible to race officials
  1. Procedure for Retiring – Once you have registered you must report to the Race Organiser if you retire before or during the race
  1. Safety bearing is NORTH down off the moor
  1. Monitoring Senior Race – Individual competitor race numbers will be recorded at the start, midway checkpoint and finish – Please assist officials

First Aid

A first aider and first aid kit will be available at Race Assembly – Senior Race marshals and sweeper carry a whistle, mobile phone, wound dressing and survival blanket

Senior Race

Senior start 7.15 pm, registration from 6 pm

BS (Category B, Short) Fell Race run under FRA rules

On gritstone moors rising to 400m above sea level

Distance 8.4km – climb 350m

Navigational fell race – route unmarked – course recce advised

Navigational skills (NS) required

Local knowledge (LK) useful

Age on day of race (including for U23s)

Minimum age 16yrs

Suitable for novices – provided FRA rules met

In view of daylight runners should be capable of completing the course within 100 minutes – Course recce advised – If required, Checkpoint 3 (Cowper’s Cross) is a suitable point from which to retire with an easy descent down Keighley Gate track to Wells Road and Race HQ.

Senior Race monitoring – Individual race numbers will be recorded as you enter the pre-Start pen, at Checkpoint 3 (Cowper’s Cross) and at the Finish – Please assist officials by making your race number visible

Junior starts from 6 pm, registration from 5 pm

Flagged and marshalled courses suitable for age categories below

REMINDER  – To comply with FRA requirements – from 2017, Junior Age Categories were renamed. They are now determined by Age on 31st December in the year of the race, ie 31st December 2023

Minimum age 6yrs (on day of race)

Junior race categories:

U9                   0.75km distance         45m climb    Start 6.00 pm

U11                 0.75km distance         45m climb    Start 6.10 pm

U13                 1.65km distance       115m climb    Start 6.20 pm

U15                 1.65km distance       115m climb    Start 6.20 pm

U19                 2.20km distance       185m climb    Start 6.20 pm

The U19 category accommodates 16–18 year-olds including any U19s who prefer not to enter the Senior Race

Only 550m uphill from Ilkley train / bus station

Parking

Please park in the Darwin Gardens car park or only on the south side of Wells Road immediately adjacent to the event. Please do not park on the north side!

Junior registration from 5 pm

Senior registration from 6 pm

Seniors £7.00

Please bring the correct change if at all possible

All monies go to the Jack Bloor Memorial Fund

Toilets

No toilets at the start / finish area. Nearest public toilets: 350m uphill to south in separate building west of White Wells. Or 650m north and downhill in town centre car park (20p but only open until 5.30 pm)

Notes

Please bring your own safety pins and drinks

No dogs to accompany competitors during the race

In the event of severe weather or other circumstances forcing cancellation this will be notified at the event on the evening and, if possible, via the website –
